How to grow Wheat Grass (its the same process used for Oat, Rye and barley)

The first step is selecting quality wheatberries. Ours are organically grown hard, red spring wheat berries.

Next soak one cup of wheat berries overnight (a minimum of 12 hours). The next day you should see some of the berries starting to sprout. Rinse well 4-5 times and let excess moisture drain.

Get 2 large Glad storage containers. Drill holes in the bottom of one.

Put about 2" of substrate in the bottom (I use an equal mix of sand and coconut coir). Water it well and allow it to drain. Layer the berries evenly on top. Don't worry about them overlapping. Keep in a dark place until they sprout.

In a few days the sprouts will be 1" tall.

At one week they will be 5-7" tall.

Its taken 2 years, but I now have a stable colony of pill bugs. These arthropods are great for any insect eaters. They are naturally high in calcium and are easily digested. My hatchling box turtles love them!

They can be kept in the cage with the turtles and will help keep the cage clean while allowing the turtles to hunt.

Seed Mixes

Summer is the perfect time to start growing fresh food for your tortoises as well as other species of reptiles who benefit from greens. We have 2 special seed mixes that provide all the nutrients for your critters. Grazing tortoise seed mix has more grasses in it for the grazing torts such as sulcatas, leopards and any other species that include grasses in its diet.

The Russian tortoise seed mix has more broad leafed "weeds" for Russian but also works well with any speicies that will eat weeds such as redfoot tortoises.

These can be planted in your pen outside or in containers. Choose a sunny location that gets at least 4 to 5 hours or sun. To plant outside prepare an area by removing any weeds and raking the soil flat. Water well and sprinkle very sparingly with seeds. If you have a lot of birds you might want to cover with hay or a thin layer of soil. Keep watered and in about a week you should have your seeds germinated and growing.

When the plants get to be about 6" or so you can either cut to feed or let them graze on it. We recommend if you are going to let them directly graze that you plant a couple of areas that can be
separated. Let them graze on the first area until they have mowed that down and move them into the other area. Replant the first one and this way you will have plants growing all summer until frost.

You can also start them in containers. We like to use kitty litter pans. Fill with soilless seed starting mix and water, moist not soggy wet. You can also use the same sand/coir mix that you use in your indoor pens. Its a great way to recycle it. Sprinkle sparingly with the seeds and cover with plastic wrap to make a mini greenhouse. This will keep the soil at the right moisture level. When the seeds have begun to sprout remover the plastic wrap and put in a sunny location. These grow best in full sun so if you are growing inside use plant lights or a very sunny window.

Kills Mosquito Larvae Before They Can Become Biting Adults

MOSQUITO DUNKS® are formulated to release effective levels of Bti for a period of 30 days or more under typical environmental conditions. The floating action of the dunks will ensure that active material is released at the surface as well as gradually settle to the bottom.

These dunks may be used in all types of containerized mosquito breeding areas. To prevent dunks from being flushed out of certain treatment sites, they can be anchored using a string tied through the hole in the center or staked in place.

MOSQUITO DUNKS® can also be applied to dry areas which are known or suspected to become breeding sites when flooded, such as abandoned swimming pools, the dunks will float to the surface when flooding occurs and start releasing the active Bti material. Alternate wetting and drying will not reduce their effectiveness.

Application Rates

Use one (1) MOSQUITO DUNK® for up to 100 sq. ft. of surface area of containerized standing water, regardless of depth. In highly polluted water with a high organic content, the application rate may have to be increased to as much as four (4) times the normal dosage based upon evaluation by the user.

When larval populations are high, aquatic vegetation dense, or the water highly polluted at the time of dunks use, pre-treatment with SUMMIT MOSQUITO BITS® is recommended. Dunks will then suppress larval development for up to 30 days or more. Some larvae which hatch after dunk application may partially develop before dying. Allow a minimum of 48 hours for their control.

MOSQUITO DUNKS® can be broken into portions for use in many outdoor applications near the household, such as containerized standing water in bird baths, old automobile tires, rain barrels, abandoned or unused swimming pools (particularly above ground types), tree holes, roof gutters for collecting rainwater, flower pots, animal watering troughs, or water gardens. MOSQUITO DUNKS® can be broken and used as shown in the following table, the amount dependent upon the surface area of the water in the treatment site.

The Turtle Rescue of Long Island 2009 Fundraiser Raffle is here.
Each year TRLI holds a raffle fundraiser to help raise funds to help keep the rescue going.
The money raised helps to buy all the necessary food, equipment and medical care for
those that need it throughout the year to take care of the many turtles and tortoises
that come through our doors.In the past five years TRLI has taken in and placed over 500
turtles and tortoises.

We've got lots of great prizes and I hope you will
all help us out by buying a ticket or two. I try to make the raffle fun
by adding as many prizes as I can and so many wonderful people donate more items
to help make it even better. This year we didn't get one of Sue's wonderful quilts, but
I did manage to find one that is almost as nice. It's an heirloom piece of art that will
last for generations to come. The winner of that quilt will certainly be the
envy of us all, but we do have lots of other great prizes too, of course they
shy by comparison, but nice none the less. Thank you to all those that have
donated to make this raffle an even better success.
