Buying turtles as gifts by Julie at The Turtle Rescue of Long Island

Itâ��s that time of year when many are looking to buy pets for gifts. Iâ��d like to give a little insight and hopefully some useful info for those deciding that a turtle or tortoise is the right choice for that gift.

First and foremost a pet turtle of any kind is a lifetime commitment! It will most likely, with proper care, outlive the recipient, regardless of the age of that person. Estimates are that a turtle will live anywhere
from 50 to 150 or more years, so if you are planning on this for a gift, be sure that the person really, really wants one and is committed to providing it with a lifetime of care.

When choosing what kind of turtle consider the environment, the space that may be allotted for an outdoor habitat as well as inside space. Be sure that a proper enclosure for the species in question can and will be provided. Take into account proper substrate and lighting as well as dietary considerations. If giving a gift be sure to also give a proper care sheet to go along with it.

If the person lives in a cold climate try to resist the urge to get a large Sulcata or other huge species. These tortoises grow to be over 100 pounds and cannot be kept in a tank, or even a tortoise table. They need a room, a heated shed or a garage for winter months. So many end up being turned into rescues because people think they can handle them, but once they reach that â��uncuteâ�� size of 18â��+ and start pooping like a horse they quickly realize it is not the kind of pet that can be kept in the house easily. Even those that live in the south need winter shelters for these larger torts.

A good tortoise to consider is something like a Russian tortoise. Best thing to do is to buy a captive bred (CB) tortoise so health issues are minimal and you are not supporting the wild caught (WC) trade. There are other smaller torts too, but the Russian tortoise is one of the most common and fairly easy to maintain. A great care sheet can be found at www.russiantortoise.net where all kinds of info on habitat and diet can be found. If thatâ��s the tort of choice, print up the care sheet and give it along with the tortoise.

Aquatic turtles are also very popular. Again, many choices, but all need larger accommodations than most pet stores will recommend. A twenty long tank is fine for a hatchling turtle, but any adult turtle should really have something at least 55 gallons or more. They also require proper UVB lighting and heat along with a basking area. Red ear sliders are probably the most popular and also the ones found most often in rescues. If you visit our website, www.turtlerescues.org youâ��ll find a list of care sheets on some aquatic turtles.

Finally, there are terrestrial turtles, or better known as box turtles. North American species are most common and Asian species are also very common in pet stores. These also need adequate space, not a tank, and need a substrate that can be kept moist with a habitat that can provide an area for daily soaking/swimming. Do not give a box turtle to someone that is squeamish about bugs and worms. Box turtles need live foods like crickets, earthworms, superworms, pill bugs, slugs, etc as well as greens and fruits.
Whichever turtle or tortoise you decide may be a perfect gift for someone, make sure they really want it first, and be sure they are willing, or you are willing, to provide it with all the essentials of a proper habitat and diet.

Hay Storage
Storing hay properly will prevent the formation of molds. This is especially important for our 3rd cut timothy as it has a higher moisture content than our other hays. You MUST remove the plastic in order to provide airflow. Choose a dry location with adequate air circulation. Closets and closed sheds with poor air circulation will not allow the hay to dry sufficiently. Failure to store the hay properly may promote the growth of mold.

This hay that we supply is the best hay we have ever seen, and is far superior to Oxbow hay.

Due to the hot weather here (Near or over 100Â° for about 10 days now) we have been unable to ship anything live and we do apologize for the inconvenience. Unfortunately we have no control over the delivery persons and want to make sure your shipment arrives to its destination alive.

A few things that we require to guarantee live delivery:

Make sure you are shipping to an address that someone will be able to sign for them and bring them right inside. Not only will the heat kill them but also ants are notorious for finding worms, crickets, etc. and killing them so do not leave them outside for any reason. If you are not going to be available yourself due to work, consider a neighbor, friend, relative, place of employment or have them held at the PO for pickup.

Also we will not guarantee them if they are shipped and no one is available to sign for them and they are sent back to the PO for you to pickup. In this hot weather the trucks are not air-conditioned and by time they finally make it back to the PO hours have passed and they wonâ��t make it in the heat. Organic Herbal Salad Mix

Organic Herbal Salad Mix is a blend of hay, weeds and flowers. It can be used by itself, either dry or moistened or mixed with your reptiles food. The mix is ideal for tortoises, turtles, bearded dragons, iguanas, or any other reptile that eats greens. This is a great supplement for store bought greens, boosting the fiber and nutritional value.

Each batch is mixed when you order to ensure freshness.

Growing Turnip Greens

Turnip greens have an excellent nutritional qualities for herbivores, and they are very high in calcium.
It is an easy to grow leafy vegetable, which can be started in small individual pots in sterile seed starting mix. Make sure to keep it evenly moist, but not soggy. When the seeds germinate, move to a sunny location. After a few true leaves appear you can transplant them into the garden or a larger container. During hot weather it is best to grow them in partial shade. After the leaves are growing well you can cut the outer leaves, cutting 2" above the root. Do not disturb the roots and it will continue to grow and produce more leaves.

I hope everyone has been having a wonderful summer!

We just wanted to let you know that with the 4th of July being on a
Wednesday this year, shipping live insects next week can only be done
with express mail. Some areas even express mail will take 2 days so to
these areas we would need to be shipped out on July 9th. Also with this
hot weather make sure you are having insects shipped to an address that
someone will be available to bring them inside as soon as they are
delivered. We can also have the box held at your nearest PO for pickup.

We will also be closed July 12 through the 18th and no shipping will go
out on those days. Shipping non live products will resume on July 19th
and live insect normal deliveries will resume on July 23. We will still
